Job Summary

The Operations Tech I – Federal OSP route Surveillance performs the daily route surveillance of the program OSP infrastructure. This includes reviewing, locating, and clearing Miss Utility (Call Before You Dig – CBUD) tickets.

Job Responsibilities

  • Cable Standbys – monitors construction activity to ensure the infrastructure is appropriately protected
  • Field Reports – provides written reports of field activity that could jeopardize or affect operations – reports are submitted to the Network Operations Center and to the OSP engineering staff
  • Fiber splicing – assists with splicing operations when tasked
  • Participates in all aspects of OSP maintenance and locating fiber optic cable routes on a regular basis while performing preventive maintenance and assisting in the restoration of OSP facilities.
  • Interfaces with OSP engineers to determine best course of action for repairs

Essential functions include the following:

  • Splice and test fiber optic cable in a field environment
  • Read and interpret Miss Utility tickets and compare to existing outside drawings
  • Field inspections of fiber routes
  • Interface with Miss Utility Call Centers and automated programs
  • Read and interpret Miss Utility tickets
  • Read and interpret OSP drawings
  • Complete and follow-up on accident and incident reports
  • Locate fiber using standard locate procedures and equipment
  • Manually uncover manhole/handhole using hand tools
  • Splice and test fiber




Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Engineering, Electronics, Software, or Networks; or a related technical or vocational education or equivalent experience
  • Two or more years applicable work experience
  • Some local travel required 

Security Requirements:

  • US Citizenship required
  • Active TS/SCI with Poly
  • Must maintain eligibility requirements for access to classified information (applicants selected will be subject to a government security re-investigation)
